Francis Joseph Khamis was the first African Kiswahili broadcaster in Kenya. He was also the first African editor of Baraza, the Swahili language newspaper with a national circulation.

Khamis founded and edited Sauti ya Mwafrika (Voice of the African) in 1945, a publication of the pre-independence nationalist movement, the Kenya African Union.

Khamis was the first African to be nominated to the Nairobi Municipal Council. He was also the first African elected member of the Legislative Council for Mombasa. And although he never made it to independent Kenya’s Parliament, he remained a major force in national politics through his journalistic columns in Baraza.
